Looking back, what I remember is the change from one stop to the next: different room, different smell, different crowd. The food stops was only one part of it. I would rather keep the pause at the food stops than add another stop.
The unglamorous part: the Chengdu meeting point was simple to find, and the food stops came at a sensible pace. There was time to ask what we were eating rather than just moving to the next plate.
Before you go, come hungry in Chengdu and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller. I would still leave extra time for the food stops.
The route made more sense once we were on it. Time at Chengdu set the pace, while the food stops gave us a reason to slow down.
