My camera roll says Dunhuang was the big moment. My actual favourite was the trail; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: transport to the trailhead was the piece I would not have wanted to arrange myself. Once there, the day felt simple. For 8 hours around Dunhuang & Silk Road, the pace felt about right.
Looking back, my legs noticed the climbs the next morning. I would still do the same route, just with lighter shoes and fewer things in my daypack. The time around Dunhuang was not the part I would cut.
Looking back, I tend to switch off when tours become a stream of dates. Here, the stories around the trail gave me enough to hold on to without overloading the day. I would rather keep the pause at Dunhuang than add another stop.
A full 8 hours, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose. I would keep the Dunhuang & Silk Road outline as it was.
