The part around the river cruise was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. Shanghai was a good counterpoint.
What helped was simple: our guide read the pace well. We got the background when it helped, then space to explore instead of a running lecture. I would keep the Shanghai outline as it was.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. I would rather keep the pause at the river cruise than add another stop.
Looking back, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around Shanghai felt specific to Shanghai, not interchangeable with another city.
Honestly, a full 3 hours, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose.
