I went in most excited about the Li River. Funny enough, the Yangshuo countryside is the part I kept talking about afterward.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at the Yangshuo countryside much more interesting.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Guilin feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
In short, worth doing for the Li River; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
