My camera roll says the Yangshuo countryside was the big moment. My actual favourite was Chengdu and Guilin; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at Chengdu and Guilin much more interesting.
Looking back, the schedule is fairly full. I would have liked another twenty minutes at the Yangshuo countryside, but I would not drop any of the main stops.
Looking back, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around Chengdu and Guilin felt specific to Chengdu and Guilin, not interchangeable with another city.
