Zhangjiajie Travel Guide: Avatar Mountains, Glass Bridge & National Forest Park
Your complete Zhangjiajie travel guide — the surreal pillar mountains that inspired Avatar, now accessible to you. Updated for 2026.
Why Zhangjiajie Looks Like Another Planet
When James Cameron first saw photographs of Zhangjiajie's sandstone pillars, he knew he'd found Pandora. These otherworldly rock columns — some over 200 meters tall and wrapped in mist and green vegetation — became the visual inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. This Zhangjiajie itinerary takes you through China's most dramatically vertical landscape.
Day 1: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park(张家界国家森林公园) is a UNESCO Global Geopark covering 480 square kilometers. You'll need at least 2 days to explore properly. Key areas on Day 1:
- Yuanjiajie (袁家界) — Home to the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" (officially renamed). The First Bridge Under Heaven — a natural stone arch connecting two pillars — is jaw-dropping.
- Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯) — The world's tallest outdoor elevator (326m), built into the cliff face. The glass-fronted ride up is an experience in itself.
- Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) — A peaceful 7.5 km walk along a crystal-clear stream at the base of the pillars. Monkeys, butterflies, and zero crowds.
Pro tip: Enter from the Wulingyuan gate and take the Bailong Elevator up. Walk the mountain-top trails, then descend via Golden Whip Stream.
Day 2: Tianzi Mountain & Ten-Mile Gallery
- Tianzi Mountain (天子山) — The highest viewpoint in the park. On clear mornings, you'll see thousands of sandstone pillars emerging from a sea of clouds. The Imperial Writing Brush Peaks are the most photographed formation.
- He Long Park — A mountain-top park with panoramic viewing platforms.
- Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) — A narrow valley with pillar formations along both sides. Take the mini-train or walk the 5 km trail.
Morning cloud sea: Arrive at Tianzi Mountain viewpoint before 7 AM if weather permits. The sea of clouds effect — pillar peaks floating above white mist — is the single most spectacular sight in Zhangjiajie.
Day 3: Tianmen Mountain & Glass Skywalk
Tianmen Mountain(天门山) is separate from the National Forest Park and equally spectacular:
- Tianmen Mountain Cableway — The world's longest passenger cableway (7,455m). The 28-minute ride takes you from the city center to the 1,518m summit.
- Tianmen Cave (天门洞) — A massive natural arch in the mountain, 131m tall. Reached by climbing 999 steps — or taking the escalator.
- Glass Skywalk (玻璃栈道) — A cliff-hugging glass walkway 1,430m above sea level. Walk on transparent glass with a sheer drop below your feet.
- 99 Bends Road (通天大道) — The mountain access road with 99 hairpin turns. Bus ride included in your ticket.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge(张家界大峡谷玻璃桥) is the world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge — 430m long, suspended 300m above the canyon floor. Walk across, look down, and question your life choices. Bungee jumping is available for the truly brave (260m, China's highest).
Best Time to Visit Zhangjiajie
- April–June: Spring. Lush green, waterfalls at peak flow. Some rain but dramatic mist effects.
- September–November: Autumn. Clearest skies, best photography conditions. Peak season.
- December–February: Winter. Occasional snow on the pillars — stunning but cold. Fewer tourists.
- July–August: Summer. Hot and crowded. Avoid if possible.
