Driving from Lijiang up to Lugu Lake the road itself is gorgeous, and the lake is impossibly clear. But the real heart of this trip is the Mosuo people. The family dinner at our lakeside guesthouse, where the matriarch explained their traditions, was something my kids still ask about.
Learning about one of the world's last matriarchal societies firsthand was fascinating and handled respectfully by our English-speaking guide. The lakeside guesthouse was simple but beautiful, and waking up to the water was perfect. Great two-day escape from the Lijiang crowds.
Traveled with my elderly mum and the slower private pace suited us perfectly. The Mosuo family welcomed us warmly and the dinner was a genuine cultural exchange, not a show. Lugu Lake is one of the most peaceful places I've been in China.
Beautiful lake and a really meaningful cultural experience with the Mosuo. The drive from Lijiang is a few hours of winding mountain road, so worth knowing if you get carsick. The family dinner and the guide's translation made the whole trip special.
