Watching the Meili (Kawagebo) sunrise from Feilai Temple is a once-in-a-lifetime sight. The first light hitting that pyramid of snow turning the peaks gold and pink, with prayer flags snapping in the wind, brought tears to my eyes. The drive through the Mekong gorge to get there is dramatic in itself. Three days, no hard trekking, all the views.
I cannot trek at altitude so the non-trekking format was perfect, we walked the Yubeng valley viewpoints at an easy pace and the driver took us along the Mekong gorge for the big scenery. Kawagebo only shows itself on clear mornings and we got lucky with two. The Feilai Temple sunrise viewpoint is rightly famous.
From Shangri-La this three-day route packs in everything Meili Snow Mountain has to offer without the multi-day Yubeng trek. The sunrise at Feilai Temple over the thirteen peaks is the headline, but the Mekong gorge drive and the Tibetan villages were highlights too. English guide explained the sacred mountain's significance beautifully.
Stunning Tibetan-borderland scenery starting from Shangri-La. The Meili sunrise depends entirely on weather, so build in flexibility, the guide explained this upfront which I appreciated. Altitude is real even without trekking, take it slow. The viewpoints over the Mekong and the snow peaks made the long drives worthwhile.
