Crossing the 5,190m Lakenla Pass on the way to Namtso was jaw-dropping, and the lake itself at 4,718m is an impossible shade of turquoise. Staying overnight at the lakeside meant we caught both sunset and sunrise. Cold and high, but a once-in-a-lifetime Tibet experience.
The overnight at Namtso is what sets this apart from the day trips. Watching the prayer-flag headlands at sunrise with almost no one around was deeply moving. The drive from Lhasa over the pass is dramatic. Make sure you've acclimatized in Lhasa first.
Sacred Namtso lived up to its reputation. The water is unreal turquoise against the snow mountains. Our guide handled the permits and altitude advice well. Two days is enough to truly soak it in thanks to the overnight stay. Bring serious warm clothes.
Namtso is one of the most beautiful places I've ever stood. The high-altitude overnight is basic but absolutely worth it for that sunrise return moment. The Lakenla Pass crossing at over 5,000m had us breathless, literally. Unforgettable two days from Lhasa.
The lake and the pass are spectacular. Just be prepared, the altitude is no joke and the overnight accommodation is very simple. But seeing Namtso's turquoise water and the prayer flags at sunrise made it all worthwhile. Good private guide.
