Meet your host, a Naxi grandmother and her granddaughter, at the Lijiang Zhongyi Wet Market. 30-minute market walk: pick fresh yak meat from the highland-cattle stall, choose 4 kinds of wild mountain mushrooms (matsutake in season), gather seasonal herbs, and select fresh yak yogurt. Then drive 10 mins to the family courtyard. Hands-on cooking session: hand-fold yak-meat dumplings with butter pleating technique, prepare the Naxi mountain-mushroom hot pot over a clay stove, and learn to butter-churn Tibet-style suyou cha (yak butter milk tea).
