Honestly, I had seen plenty of photos of the hutong lanes. Being there was quieter and more absorbing than I expected, and I stopped checking my phone for a while.
We had enough information to understand Beijing, but it never turned into a classroom. The balance felt natural. My only advice is not to shorten the time at the hutong lanes.
A practical note: the busiest place on the route was genuinely busy. Starting earlier would be my only change. The time around the hutong lanes was not the part I would cut.
