In hindsight, I expected the Yungang Grottoes to be the headline, and it was. What I didn't expect was how much context from the guide changed what I noticed there. I would rather keep the pause at the Yungang Grottoes than add another stop.
Practically speaking, the route through Beijing and Datong could be awkward to arrange independently. Having one person keep the timing straight made the whole thing calmer.
The pace suited us, but this is not a lazy half day. Leave some space before whatever you plan next. The time around the Yungang Grottoes was not the part I would cut.
