Resumen
Private day tour from Putian to Meizhou Island, ancestral home of the Mazu sea-goddess cult. Original Mazu Temple, ferry crossing, English-speaking guide.
Sobre este tour
For 100 million worshippers across Asia, every Mazu temple traces back to this one island. Meizhou is a small island off the Fujian coast where, according to tradition, a young woman named Lin Mo lived a thousand years ago, repeatedly saving sailors in storms before being deified as Mazu, the sea-goddess. Today there are over 5,000 Mazu temples worldwide — in Taiwan especially, but also in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Chinese diaspora across Southeast Asia. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims (most of them Taiwanese) make the journey back to Meizhou's original temple. UNESCO inscribed Mazu belief and customs onto its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009.
This private day tour out of Putian takes you across the strait to the island, up to the headland temple complex, and through the working pilgrimage rituals. Your English-speaking guide explains the local fishing culture, the cult's spread along the maritime Silk Road, and the unusual position of a single small island as a mother-shrine for an entire diasporic faith.
