One detail from the day: what I remember is the change from one stop to the next: different room, different smell, different crowd. The trail was only one part of it. The time around the trail was not the part I would cut.
The Hangzhou meeting point was simple to find, and the food stops came at a sensible pace. There was time to ask what we were eating rather than just moving to the next plate.
A practical note: this is not technical hiking, but it isn't a city stroll either. Starting early gave us a cooler, quieter stretch on the trail. I would keep the Hangzhou outline as it was.
In hindsight, I liked this more a day later, when I looked back through my photos and realised how different Hangzhou and the trail had felt.
In short, the guide knew when to explain and when to stop talking. Rare, and appreciated. I would still leave extra time for the trail.
