My camera roll says the Zhangjiajie peaks was the big moment. My actual favourite was Zhangjiajie; it felt less obvious and more personal. I would still leave extra time for the Zhangjiajie peaks.
What helped was simple: our guide read the pace well. We got the background when it helped, then space to explore instead of a running lecture. For 23 hours around Zhangjiajie, the pace felt about right.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. I would keep the Zhangjiajie outline as it was.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Zhangjiajie feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
In short, worth doing for the Zhangjiajie peaks; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
