I went in most excited about Pingyao old town. Funny enough, Pingyao is the part I kept talking about afterward. I would keep the Pingyao outline as it was.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at Pingyao much more interesting. The time around Pingyao old town was not the part I would cut.
Looking back, I carried more than I needed. Water, a light layer and a small power bank would have covered the whole day. I would still leave extra time for Pingyao old town.
Looking back, I had a long list of things I thought I needed to see. After Pingyao, I was happier slowing down and noticing fewer things properly.
A full 3 hours, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose.
