Overview

UNESCO Hani rice terraces carved 1,300 years ago. 2-day private tour from Kunming: Duoyishu sunrise, Bada sunset, Laohuzui viewpoint, Hani villages.

About This Tour

The most photographed landscape in southwest China. The Yuanyang rice terraces are 1,300-year-old terraces hand-carved by the Hani people into the slopes of Ailao Mountain — 1.7 million terraces stacked from 800 to 2,000 meters elevation. UNESCO World Heritage 2013. National Geographic's photographers come here. So does every Chinese landscape photographer with an Instagram account. The mirror-water terraces (Nov–April, when flooded for planting) catch the sunrise and sunset like a thousand pieces of stained glass.

This 2-day private tour is built for one thing: catching the light. We base you in the small town of Yuanyang for one night, time the drives so you're at Duoyishu for sunrise (when the sea-of-clouds rolls through), Bada for sunset (the most stacked, dramatic viewpoint), and Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) for golden hour. In between, you visit Hani villages — mushroom-shaped thatched-roof houses, women in indigo headscarves, a way of life essentially unchanged since the Tang dynasty.

Day 1 — Kunming to Yuanyang + Bada sunset:

  • 06:00 — Pickup from your Kunming hotel or Changshui Airport
  • 12:00 — Arrive Yuanyang; lunch at a Hani family restaurant (terraced rice, mushroom soup, smoked tofu)
  • 14:00 — Check into hotel (small mountain town, simple but clean)
  • 15:00 — Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) viewpoint — afternoon light on the wider valley
  • 17:30 — Bada viewpoint for sunset — the most stacked, dramatic terraces (peak photographer hour)
  • 19:30 — Hani-style dinner

Day 2 — Duoyishu sunrise + Hani villages:

  • 05:00 — Early start (your guide brings hot coffee in thermoses)
  • 05:45 — Duoyishu viewpoint for sunrise (the one in every magazine — sea of clouds rolling through the terraces)
  • 08:30 — Breakfast back at hotel
  • 10:00 — Walking tour of a working Hani village: thatched-roof houses, women weaving, the long-street feast tradition
  • 12:00 — Lunch
  • 13:30 — Depart Yuanyang
  • 19:30 — Drop-off Kunming hotel or airport

Best season: November–April (terraces flooded with water, mirror reflections). May–October (green growing season, less photogenic but pleasant temperatures). Avoid heavy summer rain weeks.

Who this is for: Landscape photographers (bring a tripod and ND filters), early risers, anyone who wants to see one of China's most ancient living agricultural systems before mass tourism finds it.
