Overview

A two-day private island getaway off Shanghai to Dongji's wild Pacific edge, where China's first sunrise rises and famous film scenes come to life.

About This Tour

Escape the megacity for a two-day private island adventure to the Dongji Islands, the easternmost inhabited archipelago off the East China Sea where the Chinese mainland's first dawn breaks each morning. Your private English-speaking guide and dedicated transfers take you from downtown Shanghai by coach and ferry to Dongfushan Island, a remote outpost the local fishermen nickname 'the homeland of wind, the cradle of waves.' You will hike a gentle coastal loop past sea-eroded rock formations, century-old stone houses with blue-and-white roofs cascading toward turquoise water, and dramatic cliffs where waves explode into spray. Evenings bring quiet seaside bars, star-filled skies, the Milky Way, and the chance to spot bioluminescent 'blue tears' (peak April-June). Day two delivers a hilltop sunrise over the Pacific, then Miaozihu Island, a pilgrimage for fans of the cult films 'The Continent' and the upcoming 'Dongji Island,' with the Lisbon Maru shipwreck memorial and the iconic East Sea lighthouse. Ideal for travelers craving raw coastline, slow island time, and an offbeat side of China few foreigners ever reach. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: April-June for 'blue tears' and clear skies; summer ferries fill fast • Fitness level: easy; island loop hike approx. 7km with about 300m cumulative ascent • Ferry tickets are name-registered and must be booked 7 days ahead; book early in peak season • Island weather is volatile; fog, wind or typhoons may delay or cancel sailings, and you may be stranded an extra day at your own cost • Bring your own toiletries; island facilities are basic

Itinerary

Day 1: Shanghai to Dongfushan Island | Sea Cliffs & Island Night

Meet your guide in downtown Shanghai around 07:00 and travel by private coach to Shenjiawan Pier, then board the ferry across the open sea to the Dongji Islands, arriving at Dongfushan Island by early afternoon. After settling into your seaside guesthouse, set out on a relaxed coastal loop hike (about 7km, 300m ascent) led by your guide. You will trace dramatic sea-eroded geology, photograph rocks that look like fallen meteorites, watch waves burst against the cliffs, and pass the Dashuwan stone-house village whose blue-and-white roofs tumble toward the turquoise sea. As night falls, unwind at a tiny harbor-side bar with live music, sea breeze and the sound of the surf, then go stargazing for the Milky Way and, in season, the magical bioluminescent 'blue tears' along the shore. Meals: free/AA local seafood. Overnight: Dongfushan island guesthouse.

Day 2: Sunrise & Film Sites | Miaozihu Island to Shanghai

Rise before dawn for one of the trip's highlights: watching the sun climb out of the East China Sea, the first light to touch mainland China. After breakfast and check-out, ferry over to Miaozihu Island to explore its cinematic side. Visit the Lisbon Maru shipwreck memorial, which tells the story of a WWII tragedy and the fishermen's daring rescue, then walk the island ring road through scenes made famous by the cult road-trip film 'The Continent,' passing the 'Soldier's Second Hometown,' the financier's statue and the iconic East Sea First Sentry lighthouse with views toward Qingbang Island. Free time to slow down on the beach, try sea fishing, paint a fisherman-style folk picture, or simply linger over coffee by the water. Reassemble at the pier around 13:30 for the single daily ferry back, transfer by coach from Shenjiawan, and arrive in Shanghai by evening. Meals: free/AA. Overnight: n/a (trip ends).
