Gami Peak Alpine Trek: 2-Day Private Expedition to Sichuan's Stone-Castle Summit

★★★★★ 4.9 (19)⏱ 2 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A two-day private trek into the wild high country near Luding, climbing to a 3,900m alpine ridge for surreal stone-castle peaks, a sea of clouds and an unforgettable Tibetan-frontier sunrise.

About This Tour

Tucked into the rugged Tibetan-frontier ranges west of Chengdu, Gami Peak has earned the nickname 'Sichuan's Patagonia' for its jagged granite spires, fortress-like rock formations and vast cloud seas. This private two-day expedition takes you from Chengdu over the Dadu River at Luding into a remote alpine valley, then up to a high camp at the foot of the massif. You trek the classic ridge line beneath the main summit, where weathered stone towers rise like a magical castle against the sky, before spending the night under a brilliant Milky Way at a backcountry camp. The reward comes before dawn on day two, when you climb to a 3,900m viewpoint to watch the first crimson light ignite a horizon of jagged peaks and rolling clouds. With its big-mountain scenery, genuine high-altitude wilderness and minimal light pollution, this is one of western Sichuan's most rewarding short treks for adventurous travelers who want a taste of the Tibetan highlands without a long expedition. As a private tour, your group travels in a dedicated vehicle with an English-speaking guide and a flexible, unhurried pace. Best enjoyed late spring through autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late April to October; clearest skies in autumn • Fitness level: moderate; round-trip trekking distance approx. 4km on Day 1 plus a dawn summit hike on Day 2 • Altitude: high camp and summit viewpoint reach around 3,900m — acclimatize, stay hydrated and pace yourself • Lodging is a basic shared mountain camp (simple dorm/tent), not a hotel — bring a warm layer for cold nights • Bring sturdy hiking shoes, headlamp, sun protection and a light down jacket

Day 1: Chengdu – Luding – Gami Peak Mountain Camp

Depart Chengdu early by private vehicle and drive west across the Sichuan basin toward the mountains, crossing the Dadu River at historic Luding around midday for lunch (roughly 300km, several hours on the road). From there you continue along the river before transferring to a local 4x4 shuttle that climbs a rough track to a high camp on the mountain's flank. After settling in around early afternoon, set out on the relaxed Weifeng ridge trail, an easy walk of about 4km round-trip with roughly 180m of ascent that opens onto sweeping views of the entire Gami massif and its surreal stone-castle peaks — the area's signature photo spot. Return to camp by late afternoon to share a hot dinner and, with almost no light pollution, watch the stars and Milky Way emerge over the peaks. Meals: D. Overnight at the mountain camp (shared dorm/tents, high altitude approx. 3,900m).

Day 2: Sunrise Summit Hike – Return to Chengdu

Wake before dawn around 5:00 and set off by headlamp on the sunrise trail, following a narrow high path toward the summit viewpoint. As the sky lightens, the jagged Mabodongjia spire emerges like a fortress beside you and waves of peaks float above a rolling sea of cloud — then the first crimson rays break across the horizon for an unforgettable alpine sunrise. Return to camp around 7:00 for breakfast and a short rest, then pack up and take the local shuttle back down to the main road. Board your private vehicle around mid-morning for the scenic drive back toward Chengdu (about 300km), sharing photos and stories along the way, with arrival in the city around 5:00pm to conclude the journey. Meals: B (lunch on your own). No overnight — trip ends in Chengdu.
