Jiami Peak 2-Day Private Trek: Sichuan's Patagonia & the Stone Castle Wonderland

Overview

A two-day private alpine trek to Jiami Peak on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, chasing fortress-like stone spires, sunrise over a sea of clouds, and a night under the Milky Way.

About This Tour

Tucked into the wild high country between Chengdu and the Tibetan Plateau, Jiami Peak (Garmi) has earned its nickname as a 'Chinese Patagonia.' Towering granite spires rise like the ramparts of a fairytale fortress, and the surrounding ridgelines deliver some of western Sichuan's most cinematic high-alpine scenery without the long approach of a major expedition. On this fully private two-day tour, your English-speaking guide and private vehicle bring you from Chongqing deep into the mountains, where a local 4x4 carries you to a camp perched at altitude. The first afternoon you trek the easy 'satellite peak' loop for classic views of the main summit and its surreal rock city; the second morning you rise before dawn to walk the sunrise ridge, watching crimson light flood the spires above a churning sea of clouds. Nights are spent in a simple high-mountain camp under a brilliant canopy of stars. This trip suits active travelers who want a genuine plateau experience, dramatic photography, and a taste of remote Sichuan close to a major city. Best from late spring through autumn, when the meadows are green and skies are clear. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late May to October • Altitude: trek reaches approx. 3,900 m; some risk of mild altitude effects • Fitness level: moderate; round-trip walks of 4-8 km with up to ~180 m gain per day • Accommodation is a basic shared high-mountain camp, not a hotel • Bring warm layers, headlamp, sturdy hiking shoes and sun protection

Day 1: Chongqing to Jiami Camp | Satellite Peak Trek

Early in the morning your private vehicle departs Chongqing and drives roughly 550 km west into the mountains (a long but scenic transfer day). In the afternoon you reach the trailhead, where a local shuttle vehicle carries you up rough mountain roads to a camp set high on the slope. Once settled, you set out on the easy 'satellite peak' loop, about 4 km round-trip with around 180 m of ascent, topping out near 3,900 m. This is the classic photography route, opening up sweeping views of the magical stone city and Jiami's main summit glowing in the late light. Returning to camp around 19:00, you share a hot dinner and spend the evening swapping stories beneath a sky thick with stars. Meals: D. Overnight: Jiami high-mountain camp (shared bunks).

Day 2: Sunrise Ridge & Return to Chongqing

Rise around 05:00 and set off in the dark for the sunrise viewpoint, following a faint herders' path up the ridge. As dawn breaks, the surrounding peaks emerge one by one, the fortress-like Mabodongjia spire standing guard like a castle from another world. From the high vantage you watch the first light wash crimson across the spires above a sea of cloud, a scene that rivals the famous Aba grasslands. Back at camp by around 09:00, you pack up and ride the shuttle down, then board your vehicle for the long return drive, sharing photos and trip stories along the way. Expected arrival back in Chongqing in the evening. Meals: B. (If weather shifted the satellite-peak walk to today, both routes are combined and the descent runs later.) Itinerary may adjust based on weather and road conditions.
