★★★★★ 4.6 (198)⏱ 4 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A 4-day private wilderness trek deep into the Hengduan Mountains to the 'Eternal Snow' glacier, with triple alpine lakes, rhododendron meadows and a signal-free starlit camp.

About This Tour

Hidden in the Hengduan Mountains on the western edge of Sichuan, far from the crowded honeypots of west China, lies a glacier that local Tibetans call 'Eternal Snow,' a peak that never melts above the Yinhai pasture. This 4-day private tour for your group only reaches it with an English-speaking guide and private vehicles, trading tourist queues for genuine high-altitude wilderness. From Chongqing you drive deep into the Tibetan township of He'ai, then transfer to local vehicles and trek into a roadless valley where moss carpets the primeval forest, rhododendrons and blue poppies bloom, waterfalls thunder and three linked alpine lakes mirror the snow peaks. You camp at around 3,800m with no phone signal and skies ablaze with stars, then chase sunrise over the three lakes before trekking out. This is a demanding, remote adventure for fit, experienced travelers comfortable with simple camping, thin mountain air and basic facilities, who want a true off-grid Himalayan-edge experience. Best from late spring to early autumn for wildflowers and open trails; the high camp is cold year-round. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late May to early October for wildflowers and clear trails • Fitness level: challenging; full days of trekking at 3,000-3,800m with sustained climbs • Altitude: camp sleeps at about 3,800m; risk of altitude sickness, no rescue or signal nearby • Camp is a shared-bunk tent with sleeping bags and very basic facilities; no phone signal • Carry trail lunches; bring warm layers, waterproofs, trekking poles and a headlamp • Local hotels in He'ai township are basic and below city standard

Day 1: Chongqing to He'ai Tibetan Township

Meet at 07:30 at exit 3B of the Jiazhou Road metro station (Line 3) to sign in, then set off; rather than a dull journey, the crew runs games and introductions on the road so the drive itself becomes part of the trip. After a long mountain road you reach Mianning county around 15:00 for a short break, where you can wander the streets and pick up supplies for the climb ahead. Continuing into the highlands, you arrive at He'ai Tibetan township around 19:00 and check into a local hotel; note that facilities here are simple and cannot be compared with same-grade city hotels. The drive covers about 680km. Meals: self-arranged. Overnight: standard hotel in He'ai Tibetan township.

Day 2: Trek to Yinhai Pasture & Eternal Snow Camp

After breakfast around 08:00 you pack up and transfer to small local vehicles to drive into the mountains, beginning the trek around 09:00. This is the secret answer for anyone tired of crowded west China: the 'Eternal Snow' is a never-melting glacier crowning the far end of the Yinhai pasture, and beneath it lie alpine lakes, wetlands, waterfalls, meadows and wildflowers of startling beauty. You walk through primeval forest where moss spreads like an emerald carpet, rhododendrons and blue poppies compete in bloom, cattle graze on high pasture and three linked lakes mirror the snow peaks, fulfilling every fantasy of west China's wilderness. By about 16:00 you reach camp, a place of no signal and few people where blissful quiet mingles with the sounds of nature. In the evening you gather by a campfire awaiting a brilliant river of stars and swapping travel tales. Meals: camp dinner included, carry trail lunch. Overnight: Eternal Snow camp at about 3,800m (shared bunks with sleeping bags).

Day 3: Triple Lakes Sunrise | Trek Out to Town

In the early morning you set out at 07:00 to catch first light unlocking the three lakes, the snow mountain reflected in still water as sunlight floods the valley. Around 09:00 you begin the return, retracing the secret valley along towering forest trails back to the trailhead. At about 13:00 you transfer by vehicle toward Mianning or Shimian county, the choice depending on the departure batch, descending out of the mountains. Reaching town around 17:00 you check into a hotel to rest and recover, with an evening to enjoy a hearty local feast after the demanding high-altitude days. The drive covers about 200km. Meals: camp breakfast included, lunch and dinner self-arranged. Overnight: standard hotel in Mianning or Shimian county.
