Lake Manasarovar Holy Lake Day Trip from Darchen

The holiest lake in Tibetan Buddhism, an hour south of Mount Kailash. Lake Manasarovar (4,590m) sits in the shadow of Kailash and is considered the source of four of Asia's great rivers — the Indus, the Sutlej, the Brahmaputra and the Karnali. Pilgrims walking the Kailash kora traditionally pair the two: the mountain for purification, the lake for spiritual renewal. This day trip from Darchen is the ideal rest day before or after the three-day kora trek.

From Darchen (the trailhead town at Kailash's foot) you'll drive south about an hour to the lakeshore, walk the main viewpoint and the prayer-flag headland, then loop around to a second viewing area looking back at Kailash itself before returning. All Tibet Travel Permits, Alien Travel Permits and Ngari military permits required for the western Tibet region are mandatory for foreign travelers — if you've reached Darchen you already hold these through your kora operator. This day trip is offered as a combo on top of the 14-day Kailash kora package; book it as your acclimatization day or your post-kora wind-down.

Day itinerary:

• 09:00 — Pickup from your Darchen lodge
• 10:00 — Arrive Manasarovar; main viewpoint over the lake (the most photographed angle)
• 11:30 — Walk along the lakeshore to a smaller prayer-flag headland
• 12:30 — Simple Tibetan lunch at a roadside teahouse
• 14:00 — Second viewpoint looking back at Mount Kailash across the plain (weather permitting)
• 16:00 — Return to Darchen; drop-off at your overnight lodge

Who this is for: Travelers already in Darchen for the Kailash kora who want a low-exertion acclimatization or recovery day. Minimum age 12. The lake itself sits at 4,590m, so you'll be walking slowly even though the day is easy by Kailash standards. Not sold as a stand-alone — Darchen is a 4-day drive from Lhasa and only makes sense bundled with the kora.
