Overview

A three-day private journey through Mount Tiantai, the cradle of the Tiantai Buddhist school and a sacred Taoist mountain, with the ancient Guoqing Temple, dramatic waterfalls and misty peaks.

About This Tour

This private three-day tour explores Mount Tiantai (Tiantaishan) in Zhejiang, one of China's most important religious mountains and the birthplace of the Tiantai school of Buddhism, with deep roots in Taoism as well - a place revered across East Asia and influential in Japanese and Korean Buddhism. At its heart stands Guoqing Temple, a serene wooden monastery founded in the Sui dynasty, home to the 1,400-year-old Sui Pagoda and famed for the legend of the poet-monks Hanshan and Shide and a single-stroke 'goose' character attributed to the calligrapher Wang Xizhi. Beyond the temple you discover the thundering Stone Beam Waterfall, ancient pilgrim trails, alpine meadows and viewpoints over a sea of peaks, plus the old town's lively food streets. Travelling with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle, you set a relaxed, culturally rich pace. Ideal for travellers drawn to Chinese spirituality, history, nature and authentic local life. Best in spring and autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: spring and autumn; pleasant temperatures and clearer views • Fitness level: easy to moderate; temple visits plus gentle walking and some stairs • Dress modestly for temple visits; photography rules may apply inside halls • Crowds peak around midday at Guoqing Temple - your guide times visits to avoid them • Tiantai old town has excellent local snacks worth trying

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Guoqing Temple | Tiantai Old Town

Your English-speaking guide meets you and drives toward Mount Tiantai, with a service-area lunch stop along the way. In the early afternoon you reach Guoqing Temple, the ancient mother monastery of the Tiantai Buddhist school, founded in the Sui dynasty around 1,400 years ago. With a private guided walk you explore the tranquil halls, ancient cypresses and the weathered Sui Pagoda, hear the story of the legendary poet-monks Hanshan and Shide, and see the famous single-stroke 'goose' character linked to calligrapher Wang Xizhi. The temple keeps its smoky incense and meditative calm without feeling crowded, especially after the midday tour groups thin out. In the late afternoon you transfer to your hotel in Tiantai town, then head out to sample the local food streets, with specialities such as jiaotongbing dumplings, bianshi wontons and maibing pancakes. Meals: self-arranged/AA. Overnight: hotel in Tiantai.

Day 2: Stone Beam Waterfall | Mountain Trails & Peaks

After breakfast you head into the mountain scenery, with the day's centrepiece the Stone Beam Waterfall (Shiliang Feipu), where a natural stone bridge spans a gorge as water thunders beneath it - one of the most celebrated cascades in eastern China and a long-standing subject of Chinese poetry and painting. You follow shaded trails past pools, smaller falls and the historic Fangguang Temple, then climb to viewpoints over forested ridges and, on clear days, a sea of peaks rolling to the horizon. Depending on the season your guide may add alpine meadow paths or a pilgrim trail used for centuries by monks and travellers. The pace stays relaxed, with time to take in the sound of falling water and the cool mountain air. In the late afternoon you return to your hotel. Meals: self-arranged/AA. Overnight: hotel in Tiantai.

Day 3: Huading Peak Views | Departure

On your final day you can visit the higher reaches of the mountain, such as Huading Peak, the highest summit of the Tiantai range, known for its alpine meadows, rhododendrons in spring, sunrise cloud seas and the secluded Huading Temple. You take an easy walk among the open meadows and ridge viewpoints for a last sweeping look over the sacred mountain. After soaking up the panoramas and any final photos, you enjoy a relaxed return: by early to mid afternoon your guide transfers you back toward the departure city to connect with your onward train or flight, ending the tour. Meals: self-arranged/AA. Transfer back included.
