Overview
Complete Ming-era walled city in Shanxi. Walking day tour of Pingyao UNESCO old town: city wall, ancient banks, courtyard mansions, Shanxi noodle lunch.
About This Tour
Pingyao is the only completely intact Ming-dynasty walled city in China. Six kilometers of crenellated city wall (built 1370), the original four gate towers, ninety-something temples and shrines, more than 3,800 surviving traditional courtyard houses, and the cobbled grid of streets where China's first modern banks (the piaohao) were born in the 1820s. UNESCO listed Pingyao in 1997. Most Chinese walled cities were either destroyed in the wars of the 20th century or rebuilt as theme parks; Pingyao is the real thing.
This private walking day tour starts at the south gate of the old city. Your English-speaking guide takes you up onto the city wall for the elevated overview, then down into the network of small lanes for the key sites: the Rishengchang former bank (China's first national bank, founded here in 1823), the Confucius Temple, a traditional courtyard mansion showing how a wealthy Shanxi merchant family lived, and the old county yamen (Qing-era government office). Lunch is at a local Shanxi noodle restaurant — Shanxi is the noodle capital of China and Pingyao is its old-school showcase.

Who this is for: History travelers, architecture buffs, photographers, families with kids 5+, anyone interested in Chinese commercial history, and travelers chaining the Beijing–Datong–Pingyao–Xi'an route. Easy walking only, but expect 6–8 km of slow pace across the day on cobbled streets.
Logistics: Best April through October. Pingyao has its own high-speed train station (Pingyao Gucheng) on the Beijing–Xi'an line — perfect to chain those two cities. The old city is closed to cars, so all sightseeing is on foot. Wear comfortable shoes. Hotels inside the wall are traditional courtyard inns — atmospheric but compact.
