Overview
Live inside living Dong and Miao villages - tour Zhaoxing's drum towers, hike the famed Tang'an terraced fields, and meet China's last gunpowder tribe on this 3-day cultural immersion.
About This Tour
This private 3-day journey drops you into one of China's richest living-heritage landscapes: the misty mountain valleys of southeastern Guizhou, home to the Dong and Miao ethnic minorities. Base yourself in Zhaoxing Dong Village, a UNESCO-listed cluster of wind-and-rain bridges and five towering wooden drum towers, where wood-smoke, weaving, and the haunting polyphony of the Grand Dong Song still shape daily life. You will pound sticky-rice cakes with locals, dye your own batik canvas bag, share a Dong long-table banquet, and watch a song-and-dance performance under the stars. Day two follows one of 'China's seven most beautiful trekking routes' from Tang'an to Zhaoxing - an easy 6.5 km through terraced rice fields and the open-air Tang'an Ecological Museum, a Sino-Norwegian project where the whole village is the exhibit. You'll dress in traditional Dong costume, learn to sing in the Dong language, and wade barefoot into the rice-fish paddies. The finale is Basha Miao Village, 'China's last gunmen tribe,' where men still carry flintlock rifles and shave with sickles. Genuinely off the beaten path yet endlessly photogenic and welcoming to families, this private tour with English-speaking guide and private vehicle is best from spring to autumn when the terraces are green or gold. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: April-October; terraces are greenest in summer, golden in autumn • Fitness level: easy; a gentle 6.5 km terrace hike on Day 2 • Family-friendly with hands-on culture activities for kids • Bring layers - mountain mornings can be cool and misty • Photography of villagers is welcomed but ask before close-ups

Day 1: Arrival - Zhaoxing Dong Village
Meet your guide and transfer from Congjiang Station to Zhaoxing Dong Village (only about 15 minutes) and check into your boutique guesthouse. In the afternoon explore the village on foot, hunting down its five great drum towers - each named for a Confucian virtue (benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, faith) - while your guide shares the story of Dong life here. Try your hand at pounding glutinous rice into chewy white sticky-rice cakes dusted with peanut and sugar, then make your own batik canvas bag under a craftsman's guidance. In the evening join a special Dong long-table banquet with the famously warm 'high-mountain-flowing-water' toasting ritual, followed by a performance of the world-renowned Grand Dong Song. Afterward, stroll to the viewpoint for the village's lantern-lit night scene. Meals: dinner included; breakfast and lunch free choice. Overnight: Zhaoxing boutique guesthouse.

Day 2: Tang'an Terraced-Field Trek & Dong Culture
Early risers can catch sunrise from the viewpoint as golden mist drifts over the village. After breakfast, shuttle up to begin the celebrated 6.5 km trek from the Tang'an rice terraces down to Zhaoxing - rated one of China's seven most beautiful walking routes. Visit the Tang'an Ecological Museum, a Sino-Norwegian living museum where the entire terraced village and its surroundings are the exhibit, and learn how the unique rice-and-fish paddy system works. Enjoy an optional farmhouse lunch en route. In the afternoon, change into ornate Dong minority costume and join a local teacher to learn Dong-language phrases and folk songs in a timber gallery, then wade barefoot into the terraces to try traditional rice-paddy fishing - a fun, cooperative activity families love. Return to the village to freshen up; dinner is at leisure among the lanes of Zhaoxing. Meals: breakfast included; lunch and dinner free choice. Overnight: Zhaoxing boutique guesthouse.

Day 3: Basha Miao Gunmen Village - Departure
After breakfast, check out and drive to Basha Miao Village, known as 'China's last gunmen tribe.' This remarkable community still preserves ancient customs: men legally carry flintlock rifles, shave their heads with sickles, and worship sacred trees, offering a rare window into pre-modern Miao life and a chance to witness a traditional ceremony. After exploring the village, transfer to Congjiang Station for your onward high-speed rail (the included intro program returns toward Guangzhou). Your guide assists with the station handover. Meals: breakfast included; lunch free choice. Overnight: not included (departure day).
