★★★★★ 5 (160)⏱ 4 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A 4-day private immersion in ethnic southeast Guizhou: the Zhaoxing Dong village, the sculpted Jiabang rice terraces, ancient banyan groves and the famous Rongjiang Village Super League.

About This Tour

Southeast Guizhou (Qiandongnan) is one of China's richest living museums of ethnic minority culture, and this 4-day private tour for your group only takes you into its heart with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle. You begin at Zhaoxing, one of the largest Dong villages in China, exploring its five great drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges and opera stages, and in the evening hearing the UNESCO-listed Dong Grand Choir, a polyphonic singing tradition unique in the world. You then drive to the Jiabang rice terraces, walking trails between viewpoints to watch dawn light flood the curved paddies, mirror-bright in spring and golden in autumn, and visiting Miao households to learn about terrace farming. The journey ends in Rongjiang for the celebrated 'Village Super League' grassroots football match, a joyous local spectacle with Dong choir and Miao lusheng dance at halftime, plus the millennium banyan grove and old riverside streets. This moderate cultural tour suits travelers seeking authentic ethnic villages, dramatic agricultural landscapes and genuine local life off the standard trail. Best in spring and autumn for the terraces. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: Apr-May for flooded mirror terraces and Sep-Oct for golden harvest • Fitness level: moderate; terrace trails involve steps and uneven paths • The Village Super League plays mainly on weekends; weekday departures may not catch a match • Bring sun protection, rain gear and comfortable walking shoes • Village guesthouse facilities are simpler than city hotels • High-speed trains link Congjiang and Rongjiang with Guangzhou and Shenzhen

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival | Zhaoxing Dong Village & Grand Choir

Meet your guide at Congjiang station by 13:30 (high-speed trains arrive from Guangzhou and Shenzhen early afternoon) and settle into your accommodation. In the afternoon your guide leads an in-depth walk through Zhaoxing, one of China's largest Dong villages, tracing the five great drum towers named for the Confucian virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trust, along with its wind-and-rain bridges and opera stages built entirely of timber without nails. In the evening you are free to attend a Dong song-and-dance performance and hear the world-renowned Dong Grand Choir, an unaccompanied polyphonic choral tradition, or climb to a viewpoint for the village night scene and savor the slow pace of life in the old lanes. Meals: not included. Overnight: hotel in Zhaoxing Dong Village.

Day 2: Zhaoxing to Jiabang Rice Terraces

After breakfast you set out at 08:00 for the Jiabang terraces, about 3 hours away through Karst hills and Dong farmland, with time to rest or take in the scenery. Arriving around 11:00 you check into a guesthouse and enjoy a free farmhouse lunch. At 14:30 you hike the terrace trails to viewpoints one and two, watching the play of light over the famously sculptural curves of Jiabang, which gleam like mirrors when flooded in spring and ripple gold at harvest. You then visit a Miao household in Jiache village to hear villagers explain the farming culture of the terraces and take part in making the same fermented fish featured in the documentary 'A Bite of China,' sampling authentic Miao home cooking. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: guesthouse at Jiabang terraces.

Day 3: Terrace Sunrise | Rongjiang & Village Super League

Rise around 06:30 for terrace sunrise at viewpoints five and six, watching the sun lift over the ridgelines as mist-wrapped paddies turn to gold in a scene of flowing light. After breakfast you drive about 2.5 hours to Rongjiang, checking into a central hotel around midday and resting. At 14:00 you explore the Sanbao Dong village's ancient banyan grove, a rare riverside stand of giant old trees, and visit the Sanbao Drum Tower, the tallest surviving Dong drum tower in China, learning the local tradition of 'worshipping the banyan.' At 19:30 you head to the Rongjiang football stadium for the celebrated 'Village Super League,' soaking up the same electric atmosphere as the 'Village BA' as local amateur teams compete, with Dong choir and Miao lusheng dance at halftime. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: central hotel in Rongjiang (weekend departures aligned with match days).

Day 4: Rongjiang Old Town | Departure

Enjoy a relaxed morning with a sleep-in and breakfast before a free half-day in Rongjiang. You can stroll the thousand-year-old town streets lined with Ming and Qing lanes, visit the Guangdong Guild Hall and the former headquarters of the Red Seventh Army, and browse ethnic handicraft shops for souvenirs and gifts. After a self-arranged lunch you transfer to Rongjiang station for departure, timed to your train (allow about 1 hour before departure). Your guide confirms the schedule and assists with the transfer. Meals: breakfast included. Overnight: not included (tour ends in Rongjiang).
