4-Day Kanas Lake Autumn Photography Tour from Urumqi

In late September the birch and larch forests around Kanas Lake turn the colour of bonfire. Kanas sits in the far north of Xinjiang where China meets Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, a long crescent of glacier-fed water folded between the Altai Mountains. Tuvan and Kazakh herders live in log villages along the valley, the lake throws milky-blue reflections in the morning, and the surrounding ridges burn gold and copper for a narrow three-week window each autumn. Photographers plan a year around it. Outside that window it's still beautiful — but September is why this tour exists.

This is a private 4-day tour from Urumqi with a licensed English-speaking guide who knows the photography spots and the timing. You'll fly or drive north to Burqin (we'll advise based on season and budget), then continue into the Kanas Nature Reserve for two full days inside the valley. We pace stops around the soft light — early morning at the lake viewpoints, late afternoon in the Tuvan villages, blue hour over the river bends.

Day-by-day:

• Day 1 — Morning pickup in Urumqi; transfer to Burqin (flight to Kanas Airport then drive, or full-day drive depending on schedule); overnight in Burqin
• Day 2 — Enter Kanas Nature Reserve; eco-bus along the valley with stops at the three river-bend viewpoints (Crouching Dragon Bay, Moon Bay, Sacred Spring Bay); afternoon walk along the lakeshore; sunset over the lake from the high viewpoint platform; overnight inside the reserve area
• Day 3 — Sunrise at Fish-Watching Pavilion for the panoramic shot; morning in the Tuvan village of Hemu (log cabins, smoke from chimneys, birch forest); afternoon free for photography; overnight near Hemu or back in Burqin
• Day 4 — Drive or fly back to Urumqi; airport drop-off available

Who this is for: Photographers chasing the autumn colour window, travellers who want one big nature experience in northwest China, anyone curious about the Tuvan minority villages. Minimum age 6 — kids handle the altitude (mostly under 2,000 m) and the walking well.

Logistics: Private air-conditioned vehicle with experienced Xinjiang driver. Three nights of accommodation (Burqin and inside the reserve — clean local standard, not luxury). Reserve entry tickets and internal eco-bus included. Daily breakfast. Foreign visitors should carry passport for every checkpoint — Xinjiang has frequent ID checks and we handle the logistics.
