Wulong Fairy Mountain & Chongqing 3-Day Private Family Tour

★★★★★ 4.5 (36)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A relaxed 3-day private family journey from Chengdu through a 1,500-year-old water town to Wulong's vast Fairy Mountain meadows and magical mountain-city Chongqing.

About This Tour

This easy-paced private family tour pairs two faces of southwest China: timeless old-town charm and the wide-open alpine grasslands of Wulong's Fairy Mountain (Xiannv Shan), a designation within the Wulong Karst UNESCO World Heritage area. Travelling with your own English-speaking guide and private vehicle, you begin in Anju, a 1,500-year-old riverside town of carved-wood opera stages, lantern-lit lanes and local snacks at the confluence of two rivers. The heart of the trip is Fairy Mountain: 100,000 mu of rolling meadow and 330,000 mu of forest where children run free, fly kites, ride the little sightseeing train, walk the treetop canopy walkway and spot grazing cattle and horses against a big mountain sky. The journey ends in Chongqing, China's dramatic vertical 'mountain city', with its cliff-hugging stilt houses, river cableway and the dazzling night view of Hongya Cave. Ideal for families with young kids, first-time visitors to Sichuan-Chongqing, and anyone wanting nature plus culture at a gentle rhythm. Best from April to October when the grasslands are green and lush. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: April to October for green grasslands; cool at altitude even in summer • Fitness level: easy, lots of gentle walking; stroller-friendly main areas • Fairy Mountain sits around 1,900m, so evenings are cool, bring a light jacket • Long drive days (Chengdu-Wulong approx 5-6h); not ideal for infants prone to car sickness • Default rooms are twins; single child sharing may incur a supplement

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Chengdu | Anju Ancient Town to Wulong

Depart Chengdu by private vehicle in the morning and drive to Anju Ancient Town in Tongliang (approx 3.5h). Wander this 1,500-year-old riverside town founded in the Sui-Tang era, set where the Qiong and Fu rivers meet. Hunt for the 'Nine Palaces and Eighteen Temples', admire the carved opera stage of the Huguang Guild Hall, and climb the Jade Emperor Tower for rooftop views over black-tiled roofs and the two-river confluence. Sample local treats like milk-skin pastry and warm chongchong cake, then sip tea in an old riverside teahouse. In the afternoon continue to Wulong (approx 3.5h), arriving in the evening for hotel check-in and a free dinner; an after-dinner riverside stroll offers Wujiang night views. Meals: none included. Overnight in Wulong district.

Day 2: Wulong | Fairy Mountain Grasslands to Chongqing

After breakfast, drive to Fairy Mountain National Forest Park, part of the Wulong Karst World Heritage landscape. A roughly 30-minute walk reaches the great meadow, where 330,000 mu of forest meets 100,000 mu of open grassland. Spend the day on family-friendly fun: ride the colourful sightseeing train through the woods, walk the treetop canopy boardwalk up to the 41m Forest Eye observation tower, fly kites on the broad plateau and watch grazing cattle and horses. Photograph the famous wavy 'ribbon road' near the racecourse stop. In late afternoon transfer to downtown Chongqing (approx 2.5h) for check-in. Evening is free to enjoy authentic Chongqing hotpot or admire the Hongya Cave riverside lights. Meals: breakfast. Overnight in Chongqing city.

Day 3: Chongqing City Walk | Return to Chengdu

Discover the magical vertical city on a relaxed morning city walk with your guide. A suggested route links Liberation Monument, the historic Shibati 'eighteen steps' old stairways, the Yangtze River cableway gliding high above the water, Longmenhao old street and Hongya Cave. Children love the 'climbing slopes and steps' feel of the mountain city, the cliffside stilt houses and the cable-car ride across the river. After a final taste of Chongqing street food, your private vehicle returns you toward Chengdu, arriving in the evening where the tour ends at the South Railway Station area. Meals: breakfast. Drive approx 4h.

One of the best days of our trip. Chengdu is a must, and the private format is so much better.
