My camera roll says Dunhuang was the big moment. My actual favourite was the Silk Road route; it felt less obvious and more personal.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at the Silk Road route much more interesting.
Looking back, the schedule is fairly full. I would have liked another twenty minutes at Dunhuang, but I would not drop any of the main stops.
Looking back, I tend to switch off when tours become a stream of dates. Here, the stories around the Silk Road route gave me enough to hold on to without overloading the day.
Worth doing for Dunhuang; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
