Looking back, a small thing I appreciated: the guide let Jiayuguan Fort speak for itself sometimes. Not every quiet moment needed another speech.
The unglamorous part: pickup, tickets and the order of stops were handled without fuss. That sounds ordinary, but it is exactly what you want on a full sightseeing day. The time around Dunhuang was not the part I would cut.
One thing I learned: the day ran a little longer once traffic was included. I was tired at the end, but not sorry we stayed for the Silk Road route.
Not every minute was engineered into a “moment.” There was time for coffee, questions and simply watching Dunhuang & Silk Road go by.
