Driving from Kashgar up onto the Pamir Plateau to Tashkurgan was surreal. Karakul Lake with Muztagh Ata reflected in it is one of the most beautiful sights in China. Our guide had all the foreign-visitor permits sorted, which was a huge relief. Two days well spent.
The Tajik villages and the Stone Fort at Tashkurgan gave a real sense of being on the edge of China. The Pamir landscapes are otherworldly. The permit handling for foreigners was seamless, which I'd read can be a nightmare to arrange alone. Highly recommend.
Karakul Lake and the view of Muztagh Ata were the photographic highlights of my entire Xinjiang trip. The Tashkurgan Stone Fort and the Tajik culture up on the Pamir felt like another world. Two days, private, permits handled, no stress at all.
An incredible high-altitude escape from Kashgar. The road up to the Pamir is stunning, Karakul Lake is a jewel, and the warmth of the Tajik people in Tashkurgan stayed with me. Glad I went with a private tour that managed the special permits.
