Sobre este tour
Jianshui is the southern-Yunnan old town that travel guides keep forgetting to mention. Six hundred years ago it was a regional Confucian academic centre — its temple complex is the second-largest in China after Qufu — and during the early 20th century French-built narrow-gauge rail era, it was a quiet stop on the Hanoi-to-Kunming line. The result is a strange and lovely mix: Ming gate towers, Qing courtyards, French-influenced railway architecture, and a still-active little tourist train that runs out into the countryside on the old colonial tracks.
This half-day private tour packs the best of it into one efficient morning or afternoon. With your English-speaking guide, you walk the old town's main axis from the East Gate (older than Beijing's Tiananmen) to the Confucius Temple, then ride the narrow-gauge tourist train out to Tuanshan — a perfectly preserved 19th-century Han-Chinese walled village built by the wealthy Zhang merchant clan, with carved-wood courtyards and ancestral halls almost unchanged in 100 years.
Itinerary:
- 08:30 — Pickup from your Jianshui hotel
- 09:00 — Start with the East Gate (Chaoyang Lou), the Ming-dynasty gate tower that's even older than the one in Beijing
- 09:30 — Walk the old-town lanes to the Confucius Temple — the second-largest in China — and the adjoining Confucian academy gardens (~75 min)
- 11:00 — Coffee or tea in a converted Qing courtyard along the way
- 11:30 — Board the Jianshui–Tuanshan tourist train at the restored old station; ride the narrow-gauge tracks ~30 min through farmland to Tuanshan
- 12:00 — Walk through Tuanshan's intact Qing courtyards and ancestral halls (~45 min)
- 12:45 — Train back to Jianshui
- 13:15 — Drop-off at your Jianshui hotel
Who this is for: History travelers, architecture buffs, families with kids age 5+ (the little train ride is a hit), photographers. Easy walking, no altitude (Jianshui is at 1,300 m, mild and warm most of the year). Pairs well with a Yuanyang rice-terrace trip — Jianshui is the natural overnight stop on the way from Kunming.
Logistics: Private vehicle to the old town, then we walk; tourist train tickets are pre-booked. All entrance fees included. The Jianshui–Tuanshan train runs on a fixed schedule, so we'll lock the time of your slot when you book.
