Overview

A private 3-day photography escape to China's youngest volcanic island, chasing fiery sunrises over multicolour sea cliffs, a Gothic coral-stone cathedral and the Crocodile Hill lava geopark.

About This Tour

Weizhou Island, off the coast of Beihai in Guangxi, is China's largest and youngest volcanic island, formed by eruptions tens of thousands of years ago and ringed by dramatic sea-eroded lava cliffs. This private 3-day tour is built around the island's golden light, with a dedicated photography guide timing each location for the best conditions: the layered red, yellow and green strata of Dripping Red Screen Cliff at sunset, the volcanic-rock sunrise at Five-Colour Beach, the slow island life around Shengtang Catholic Church (a late-Qing French Gothic landmark built entirely from coral and volcanic stone), and the lava formations of Crocodile Hill Volcanic Geopark. With private transfers, hand-picked guesthouses and a flexible shooting schedule, it suits photography lovers, couples and anyone drawn to wild coastal scenery and a slower pace away from the mainland crowds. Best enjoyed spring through autumn, when seas are calm and skies are clear. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: spring to autumn (calm seas, clearest light); ferries are limited and sell out on holidays – book early • Fitness level: easy – short coastal walks only, suitable for all ages 8+ • Ferry crossings depend on weather, tides and occasional military/sea-condition closures; sailings may shift and trips can rarely be postponed (force majeure) • Bring tripods, ND/graduated filters and a power bank for sunrise/sunset shoots • Meals are not included – island seafood is excellent and dining is flexible

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Beihai → Weizhou Island | Ferry Crossing & Dripping Red Screen Sunset

Make your own way to Beihai and meet at the Beihai International Passenger Port (gathering 14:00–14:20). Board the afternoon ferry (planned 15:20–16:30, roughly 70–90 minutes) across the Beibu Gulf to Weizhou Island and check into your guesthouse. As the day cools, head to Dripping Red Screen Cliff, the island's most striking sea-eroded landform: a sheer wall of volcanic strata banded in red, yellow, purple, green and blue, crowned with hanging vines and flowers. Your photography guide sets up for the sunset, working the colour and texture of the lava cliff against the sea. Travel note: ferry tickets are name-registered with strict daily caps, so early booking is essential. Meals: dined freely. Accommodation: Weizhou Island standard twin room.
2

Day 2: Five-Colour Beach → Shengtang Cathedral → Shiluokou | Sunrise to Sunset

Rise before dawn for sunrise at Five-Colour Beach, where sea-eroded cliffs, platforms and caves catch the first light over banded volcanic rock – the island's prime spot for fiery seascape shots. After breakfast, visit Shengtang Catholic Church, a French Renaissance-Gothic structure and one of the four great late-Qing cathedrals, built entirely from the island's coral, rock and lime; the surrounding lanes still hold Weizhou's original architecture and unhurried way of life, rich with human-interest frames. In the late afternoon move to Shiluokou Beach on the western coast, with clear water, broad soft sand and a glowing sunset over the sea. Your guide adjusts the order to the day's tides and light for the best results. Meals: dined freely. Accommodation: Weizhou Island standard twin room.

Day 3: Crocodile Hill Volcanic Geopark → Ferry to Beihai

This morning explore Crocodile Hill Volcanic Geopark, one of Weizhou's signature sights, famed for its sculpted lava landscape and sea views – weathered volcanic rocks in countless fantastical shapes that testify to the island's eruptive origins, with strong morning light for photography. After a relaxed lunch and depending on the ferry schedule, transfer to the West Corner Pier to sail back to Beihai International Passenger Port (planned 14:30–15:50), arriving around 15:50. From there continue to the railway station or airport for your onward journey, ending three days of island photography. Travel note: book any return train after 17:00 or flight after 18:00 to allow for the crossing. Meals: dined freely. Accommodation: not included (onward travel).
