Overview

Climb to the rolling alpine meadows of Bamian Mountain, one of Hunan's highest summits, and camp under the stars for sunrise above a sea of clouds.

About This Tour

Bamian Mountain (Bamianshan) rises to nearly 2,000 metres on the border of Hunan and Chongqing, a vast plateau of windswept alpine meadows, grazing horses and panoramic ridgelines that feels worlds away from the subtropical valleys below. This private 2-day trek is built around the mountain's signature trio of experiences: walking across open high-altitude grassland, watching a sea of clouds pool in the valleys at dawn, and spending a night near the summit beneath a brilliant canopy of stars. The route is moderate rather than extreme, with a steady ascent that rewards reasonable hikers with sweeping 360-degree views, and the option to upgrade to a more comfortable tent or a fully equipped camping setup near the top. With your own English-speaking guide, private transport and a flexible schedule, this is an excellent short mountain escape for active travelers who want a real summit-and-stars experience without committing to a long expedition. Best hiked from late spring through early autumn when the meadows are green and skies are clearest. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: May-October for green meadows, mild days and the clearest sea-of-clouds mornings • Fitness level: moderate; a steady uphill hike to roughly 2,000 m, suitable for regular walkers • Mountain nights are cold and windy even in summer; warm layers, hat and gloves recommended • Weather can change quickly; sunrise and sea of clouds are natural phenomena and not guaranteed

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Changsha / Bamian Mountain | Ascent to the Summit Meadows

Depart in the morning by private vehicle for the long, scenic drive into the highlands on the Hunan-Chongqing border (roughly 4-5 hours depending on the start city). After a packed lunch at the trailhead and a gear check, begin a steady ascent of around 6-8 km, climbing through forest and then out onto the open alpine plateau, where grazing horses and rolling grassland stretch toward the horizon at nearly 2,000 metres. Your guide sets a comfortable pace with plenty of photo stops along the ridgeline. Reach the summit camping area in the late afternoon, set up tents, and enjoy a hot camp dinner as the light softens. After dark, the lack of light pollution makes for spectacular stargazing before an early night. Meals: L, D. Overnight: summit camp (tent).

Day 2: Bamian Mountain / Changsha | Sunrise, Sea of Clouds & Descent

Wake before dawn for the trip's highlight: watching the sun rise over the ridges while, on clear mornings, a sea of clouds fills the valleys far below and slowly burns off as the light strengthens. Enjoy a simple hot breakfast at camp, then explore the high meadows in the soft morning light before breaking down camp. Begin the descent back down the mountain (about 6-8 km), retracing the grassland and forest trail with fresh perspectives over the surrounding peaks. Reach the trailhead around midday for a local lunch, then transfer by private vehicle back to the city (roughly 4-5 hours), arriving in the evening in time for onward travel. Meals: B, L. Overnight: not included.
