Overview
A private two-day trek along the legendary Ancient Shu Road through Jianmen Pass, China's most dramatic cliff-guarded mountain gateway.
About This Tour
Walk one of China's oldest and most storied roads on this private two-day trek along the Ancient Shu Road (Shu Dao) at Jianmen Pass in northern Sichuan, immortalized by the Tang poet Li Bai as 'harder to travel than the road to heaven.' For over 2,000 years this stone-paved route was the strategic lifeline linking the central plains with the Sichuan Basin, threading between towering vertical cliffs that made Jianmen Pass one of the most formidable natural fortresses in the empire. With your own English-speaking guide and private vehicle, you trek peaceful, well-marked sections of the old road through stations such as Lanmaqiang, Jianzhou Yi and Hanyang Pu, passing post-road relics, ancient cypresses and rural villages largely untouched by mass tourism. Local food is a highlight, from the famous Jianmen tofu banquet to a countryside farmhouse lunch. The walking is moderate, mostly flat with little climbing, making it ideal for travelers who want a genuine, immersive look at historic rural China without the crowds. Best enjoyed spring through autumn. This is a fully private tour arranged for your party alone, with hotel, transfers and pacing tailored to you. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: spring through autumn (Mar–Nov) • Fitness level: moderate; about 9 km on Day 1 and 16 km on Day 2, mostly flat with minimal climbing • Reached via high-speed rail from Xi'an North to Jianmen Pass station (approx. 2.5 hrs); arrange to arrive at the pass before late morning • Wear comfortable hiking shoes; full mobile signal along the route • Suitable for ages roughly 6–65

Day 1: Xi'an to Jianmen Pass · Tofu Banquet & Lanmaqiang Trek
Begin with a high-speed train from Xi'an North to Jianmen Pass station, where your guide meets you. Drive to a local restaurant for the renowned Jianmen tofu banquet, a regional specialty served in dozens of inventive styles. Continue by private vehicle (about 1 hour) to the trailhead at Lanmaqiang ('Horse-Blocking Wall'). From here you trek roughly 9 km over around 3.5 hours through Liangshan Township, crossing Qingliang Bridge and Zhouyazi en route to Pu'an Town. The path is nearly flat with little elevation gain, winding past sections of the historic post road, terraced fields and quiet hamlets, with full mobile signal and an unhurried pace ideal for photography. Arrive in Pu'an Town in the late afternoon and check into your hotel, then explore the small old town and sample local spicy hotpot-style fare at leisure. Meals: lunch (tofu banquet).
