★★★★★ 4.5 (151)⏱ 3 days and 1 hour · Private🗣 English guide

Overview

A 3-day private journey through southwest Zhejiang's living history: the enigmatic Longyou Caves, a triple-province ancient town, an old imperial trail, and the UNESCO-listed Jianglang Mountain.

About This Tour

Tucked into the green hills where Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangxi meet, Quzhou is one of China's most overlooked cultural pockets, and this private tour reveals it at a relaxed, in-depth pace. You will descend into the Longyou Caves, a vast man-made grotto complex carved over 2,000 years ago and still wrapped in mystery, often called 'the ninth wonder of the world.' You will wander Youbu, a thousand-year-old canal town famous for its hearty Lanxi breakfast street, and Ershibadu, a remarkably preserved Ming-Qing town that blends Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Fujian architecture and where 142 surnames and 13 dialects still coexist. A gentle walk along the stone-paved Xianxia Ancient Trail, an old strategic pass through bamboo forest, links these living villages. The journey culminates at Jianglang Mountain, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site whose three towering stone pinnacles and dramatic 'thread of sky' staircase are among the most striking landscapes in eastern China. Designed for private groups, the tour pairs a full-time English-speaking guide and private vehicle with comfortable 4-star hotels and Quzhou's celebrated regional cuisine. Best enjoyed spring through autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: March to November; spring and autumn are most comfortable • Fitness level: easy to moderate; the Xianxia Trail and Jianglang Mountain involve walking on stone steps for 1-2 hours • Bring comfortable walking shoes and a light rain layer • ID/passport required to enter scenic areas • Quzhou cuisine is famously spicy; let your guide know dietary preferences in advance

Itinerary

Day 1: Hangzhou - Youbu Ancient Town - Longyou Caves - Jiangshan

Depart Hangzhou around 07:30 and drive southwest (about 3.5 hours) to Youbu, one of the 'four great millennial towns' of Zhejiang, a former river port lined with old shops, stone bridges and a renowned breakfast street; sample local specialties such as beef noodles, jizi guo and tofu-skin dumplings, and visit the quirky Camera Museum and a traditional soy-sauce garden. In the afternoon, explore the Longyou Caves, an astonishing complex of more than 50 hand-carved grottoes whose origin remains unsolved, then continue to Minju Yuan, an open-air ensemble of relocated Ming and Qing residences celebrated for their brick, wood and stone carvings. In the evening transfer to Jiangshan city for check-in and a chance to taste Quzhou's bold regional food. Meals: L. Overnight: 4-star hotel in Jiangshan.

Day 2: Ershibadu Ancient Town - Xianxia Ancient Trail - Dai Li Residence

After breakfast, drive to Ershibadu, the 'town with one foot in three provinces,' a strategic garrison turned trading hub whose well-preserved streets fuse Anhui horse-head gables, Zhejiang roof ridges, Jiangxi eaves and Fujian brickwork, earning it the nickname 'museum of architecture.' Wander the lanes along Fengxi Stream and try the town's famous 'eight bowls' banquet. In the afternoon set out on a gentle 2-3 hour trek along the cobbled Xianxia Ancient Trail, an old imperial pass winding through bamboo forest past several historic gateways with sweeping mountain views from the ridge. Stop at the intriguing former residence of Dai Li, hidden with secret passages and concealed rooms, before returning to your hotel in Jiangshan. Meals: B. Overnight: 4-star hotel in Jiangshan.

Day 3: UNESCO Jianglang Mountain - Qingyang Village - Hangzhou

Drive after breakfast to Jianglang Mountain, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site famed for its three colossal 'pan stones,' among the most dramatic rock formations in southeast China. Climb the winding Eighteen Bends, pass a thousand-year-old temple and ascend the legendary 'thread of sky,' a narrow fissure between sheer cliffs; the fit and adventurous can take on the airy Langfeng summit route. In the afternoon visit Qingyang, a beautifully preserved Ming-Qing village that produced eight imperial ministers and 83 scholars, where ancestral halls tell of a scholarly clan's heritage. Begin the return drive to Hangzhou, arriving around 20:30 for tour disbandment. Meals: B. Overnight: not included (tour ends).
