2-Day Mt Fanjing UNESCO Pilgrimage Tour from Tongren

Mount Fanjing is one of the most surreal places I have ever climbed. The twin temple spires perched on that thumb of rock, reached by a stone bridge across the gap, look impossible. The cable car gets you most of the way but the final stairs are a workout. UNESCO listing it in 2018 was no accident. Two days and an overnight at the base made it manageable.

Tongren is remote but the pilgrimage up Fanjing is worth the journey. Climbing the summit stairs through the clouds to the two temples felt genuinely spiritual. Our private guide timed the cable car for early to beat the queues. Staying overnight at the mountain base meant an unhurried start. Bring layers, it is cold and windy up top.

The Red Clouds Golden Summit with the temple bridge spanning the chasm is the photo everyone comes for, and it is even more dramatic in person. Two days from Tongren with a private guide who handled all the cable car and entry logistics. The summit stair climb is steep but the views over the sea of clouds are the payoff.
