Xishuangbanna feels like a completely different China - tropical, lush and so close to Laos in feeling. Our three days from Jinghong took us deep into the rainforest and to a Dai village where we shared a meal. The Mekong jungle market was a riot of fruit and spices I'd never seen.
The Dai minority culture was the heart of this trip. Our English guide translated everything and the warmth of the village families was genuine. Three days in 28-degree warmth while the rest of China was cold - perfect winter escape. Loved the tropical botanical gardens.
A rainforest tour with real substance. We walked jungle trails, saw wild plants and visited a Dai stilt-house village. The food - banana-leaf grilled fish, pineapple rice - was incredible. Our guide based in Jinghong clearly knew the region inside out. A hidden gem of Yunnan.
Hot and humid as promised but that's the appeal. The Mekong-side markets and the Dai villages were the standouts over the three days. A relaxed pace, very private. Would have liked one more day, that's how much we enjoyed the rainforest. English guide was lovely.
